When it come to counseling you do not want to treat symptoms only, but the whole human being. There are times you will have to think outside the box depending on the patient. First and foremost, you have to be led by the Holy spirit in either avenue that you choose to take. John 16:13, tells us But when he, the spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. As the clinician, we have to make sure we meet each patient where they are without any judgement.
I can remember when my son was battling mentally; yes, of course as his mother I was praying, but he was sent to MMHI where they could get him stabilized. After he was released, he was scheduled to be seen at Alliance where he had a team of people. Alliance worked okay, but all I witnessed is him being full of meds with no personality and no plan of action. I had him transferred to Memphis Health Center. They were treating him with a plan to get him back into society without medication. Fast forward, my son is off all medication and recently became a truck driver. There were several scriptures I stood on, with one being Proverbs 10:7, the memory of the just is blessed.
