Intro to Core Courses » One of the most significant things I read regarding the history of Christianity.

Paula Bingham
One of the most significant things I read regarding the history of Christianity was that 200 years after Christ’s death and ascension, women were leaders that taught the Word of God in their homes. Because the home was mainly a woman’s domain and that’s where they partook of the communal meal, the women of the house naturally taught the Word of God also. People back then were comfortable with women being in authority. However, this quickly changed when Ignatius of Antioch came on the scene. Around 110 AD, Ignatius became a key figure in Christianity. He believed that consolidating house churches to one organization under a Bishop would bring power to the church. Ignatius proposed a structure for the church based on Roman city government. The Christian congregation became the Roman city and the Bishop became the administrator; and of course, the administrator could not be a woman. In letters to the churches he visited, Ignatius brought forth his design for a more unified Christianity and the people bought into it. Not long after, women lost their power in the early church and were not able to hold any leadership positions.

The subject of women being in leadership and teaching the Word of God is still as controversial today in the 21st century, as it was long time ago. People still argue the fact that women should not preach and teach the Word of God. What leads them to believe this is the word given in 1 Timothy 2:12 where it says, I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. First, this is not the Word of God, but Paul’s word, and he is only addressing issues that were going on in the church at that time. Paul's language pinpoints that his concern is not generally with women teachers but a specific situation with women in Ephesus. So, Paul's prohibition of women teaching is only meant for that time and place. With time, people and situation change over time. Many women today are church leader just as they were 200 years after Christ’s death and ascension. I believe that due to the heart of men, it will always be a controversial topic; however, to understand the Lord’s view, we must not just read the bible for understanding but study. The bible says in 2 Timothy 2: 25 that we must study to show ourselves approved of God, a workman need not ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

Paula, thanks for your post. I like how the video highlights the value of women. We will always be important and needed and we are womb carriers. I am glad God sees our value and because of the role He has given us others have to see it to, even if it is not acknowledge. God can use anybody and others are watching whether we know it or not.

Paula I was very surprised that there were more women leaders in the bible, I knew about Deborah and Esther just to name a few. I was sure that women did more than what they gave them credit for. We must always study to show our self approved like 2 Timothy 2:15. Even though it didn't last long back then we are still going strong today even though we are still experiencing the fact that some people don't want us to. I'm glad we are not living for man, but our heavenly father and he have no respect of person. Acts 2:17.

Ms. Paula,
You are so right about the fact that women being in leadership and teaching the Word of God is still as controversial in the 21st century. Your biblical reference found in 1 Timothy 2:12 reads, I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. The points you made, concerning what was truly being addressed was on point. He was referencing the issues the church was having during that period of time and place. That is why it is so important to know the historical background of scripture to rightly divide the Word of God which leads us directly to 2 Timothy 2: 25 Study to show ourselves approved of God, a workman need not ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. Again, the scripture reference you used was perfect! This verse is for all mankind from that time period through the ages! Acts 2:17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people, your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Yes , All means ALL! The book of Acts truly focuses on the move of the Holy Spirit and how real the Spirit is as it comes upon those who believe! I know beyond a shadow of a doubt women were a part of the day of Pentecost when the Spirit filled the entire house with fire and speaking in other tongues! I pray that man will be able to look at the heart of God and realize the Spirit is for ALL people and stop being caught up on if it is a man or woman who proclaims Jesus Christ is Lord of All! To begin to focus on what the church needs today, a hunger for this same past experience, for a revival and outpouring of His Spirit! Throughout the ages it has taken men and women alike to keep the message of the Gospel alive, passing it down from generation to generation. Thank you for sharing your perspective on one of the most important take aways you received from the history of Christianity.
