COURSE 26 - SERMON PREPARATION » The Impact of Doctrine Preacher vs Hearer

Sandra Lately
The scripture in 2 Timothy 3:16 - 17 says, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Doctrine is also considered teaching in other translations. Doctrine is defined as the biblical teachings that are found in God's Word. Preacher must study the word and help the Hearers or believers understand what the word of God is saying. The Preacher is supposed to preach with confidence with the understanding that their message came from God himself. The Hearer is supposed to study the word that was given and apply it to their lives. 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. In other words, the hearer is to give diligence and be zealous, with total effort of mind, emotion, and will. This is so they may be able to properly interpret the Word of God. The hearer is to engage with the preached word and compare it to the word themselves.

This is a powerful and thoughtful reflection on the role of both the preacher and the hearer in relation to the Word of God. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul tells us that All Scripture is given by inspiration of God... This means that every word in the Bible is God-breathed—divinely inspired. Its purpose is clear: to provide doctrine (teaching), reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. and you certainly capture that in your post thanks for sharing.

Ms. Sandra, I agree and love the scriptures in the Book of II Timothy that you used to support your response. Instruction serves not only as guidance for showing us the right way of living but also as divine training for those entrusted to teach and lead others. A preacher must be instructed in the scriptures to rightly divide the Word of truth (II Timothy 2:15), then as a result, as you pointed out, the hearer is then supposed to study the Word that was given to apply to his or her life. Also, I learned so much about the word doctrine. You mentioned that the word doctrine is considered teaching in other translations which I found to be interesting. Thank you for sharing such a strong conviction of rightly dividing the Word of God so the preacher will bring forth the whole truth!
