COURSE 15 - GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT » Why are the gifts of the Spirit necessary for the Modern Day Church

Paula Bingham
The gifts of the Spirit are necessary for the Modern Day Church to promote the Kingdom of God. Each gift prepares, edifies, and unifies us in the faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ. No matter what gift each believer receives, the purpose is to edify and mature the body of Christ.
The Apostle Paul describes these gifts by using one key word, manifestation. The bible says in I Corinthians 12:7, that the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. The word manifestation indicates something is perceptible by human senses. We cannot see Holy Spirit; however, through the gifts of the spirit we sense that Holy Spirit is there. By using our gifts, the world knows that the Holy Spirit is there too. He lives on the inside of us and He is very much REAL!
Each gift profits us all. Each and every person has a gift; whether they use it or not. The bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, that we are many members but one body. The Lord wants us all to operate our gift so that no one is left out from receiving revelation, power and inspiration. The gifts of the Holy Spirit cannot be bought nor earned, we freely receive them from Holy Spirit.

I love how you talk about the gifts unifies us in the faith and knowledge of Jesus. Ultimately we are to spread the gospel about Christ and in doing that it edifies the church. In Ephesians 4:12 it talks about equipping the saints for the work of the ministry and for the edifying of the Body of Christ. Each gift we receive is to be used to help one another and not use it for ourselves.

Paula, I agree with you, that according to the Word of God, in 1 Corinthians 12: 12-13 we are many members as one body! One body means in one accord! Working together to build HIS Kingdom. Yes, it takes the power of the Holy Spirit to equip believers to serve God, build up the body of Christ! Using diverse abilities and demonstrating the power of God through each person's unique talents. I also agree and believe that when believers use his or her gifts people are aware that the Holy Spirit is very present and real! I love how His Spirit shines through you each class. It is evident that you are walking in your purpose not to edify yourself but to lift other members of the body up! May God continue to bless you each and every day! Hope.
