COURSE 15 - GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT » Why are the gifts of the spirit of God necessary for the modern-day church?

Hope Khalil
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are important for the modern-day church because they equip believers to serve God, build up the body of Christ through diverse abilities, and demonstrate the power of God by enabling individuals to use their unique talents to encourage, heal, and reach others, ultimately promoting unity and spiritual growth within the church community. Spiritual gifts are a special gift of the Spirit given to every believer by Christ, in which each individual Christian needs to fulfill the mission of the church. Spiritual gifts (charismata) plural form of the Greek word charisma refers to the divine gifts that enable believers to fulfill his or her calling. These gifts may be understood as outward signs of grace received through faith. Also, as we think about spiritual gifts, we must keep in mind that what makes them spiritual is that they come from the Holy Spirit.  What makes them a gift is that the Holy Spirit freely gives them to us so we can use them in serving the body of Christ.  Spiritual gifts are not meant to be stored or publicized. They are meant to be used. The threefold categorization of the gifts 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6, speaks of Paul’s conviction, that the variety of gifts has a difference not only in function, but also the usefulness for the upbuilding of the church. Paul seems to say that all are charismatic gifts, but that some are more service- and action-oriented than others. Later in 1 Corithians, verses 12-26 he emphasizes that there must be unity when exercising the diverse gifts of the Spirit. That was for believers then and remains true for believers today in the modern-day church. Lastly, in 1 Corithians 13, the church, today, must value highly, those gifts that contribute most to the spiritual growth of believers and to the upbuilding of the church by the proclamation of the gospel.

Hope I appreciate what you shared especially about how gifts are used for spiritual growth to edify the church. In Ephesians 1:16 it says that from whom the whole body, joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Of course we know that when the scripture says body it is referring to the body of Christ.

Hope thanks for sharing your thoughts. You have elaborated successfully on why the gifts are beneficial to the modern day church. I agree we must use our gifts to build up the body of Christ. Our gifts can be the healing or encouragement that others may need. We must continue to utilize our gifts to serve others.
