COURSE 12 - INSPECTING YOUR SPIRITUAL ROOTS » Negative Spiritual Root

Kristy Hammond
I believe fear is a spiritual root that has choked the life and stunted the spiritual growth of many believers. Fear keeps many believers from moving forward with what God may have told them to do. In my own personal life, fear has limited and stopped me from moving forward. Psalm 23:4 says, Even though we walk through the darkest valley, we will fear no evil because God is with us. Although we have this word that does not stop us from being fearful. God has said even in our darkest moments He would be with us. Fear is not from God. That is the enemy trying to take hold and stop us. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, For God gave us not a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. God wants us to prosper, John 10:10 says, The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. We must lean into God so that we can experience His power, love, and self-control at work.

Fear is one root that has definitely affected the lives of many believers. It can stunt a person's growth tremendously and prevent them from moving forward. According to the Word of God, it takes 3 dimensions to overcome fear. The bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but power, love and a sound mind. The power given to us must be controlled by love. If we truly know the love of the Father, we don't have to fear. The bible says in 1 John 4:18 that perfect love casts out fear. We must grow to understand the love of the Father. The 3rd dimension is a sound mind. The Word of God says in, Isaiah 26:3, that I'll keep you in perfect peace, all whose MINDS are stayed on me. If we keep our minds on the Lord, nothing will come to hurt or harm us. All things will work together for our good.

Kristy, Yes and I'll say it again, YES! Fear can paralyze anyone, especially believers! The enemy does not want us to walk outside of fear. He knows, that if we give him an inch, he will take a mile and then some. We have to remind him, and stand on God's Word ,2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind. I love the scripture you used Psalm 23:4 - That no matter how dark it is or looks God is and will be with us! There was a time when I was 9 yrs. old and I woke up and I could not move, literally could not, there was a heaviness around and over the top of me, like a dark cloud, I was fearful, I could only pray in my mind and asked God to take away that feeling of darkness. I told my vacation bible teacher about it, at the time I had not asked Jesus into my heart, but I knew how to pray. The scripture she gave me was Romans 8:38-39, For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,.... will be able to set us apart from the love of God! I read that every night for years to give me reassurance that I was not alone, in the dark. Thank you for sharing because you allowed me to reflect on how real fear is and that LOVE conquers all! You are awesome and God is using you in our class!

Kristy, I am right there with you fear is very cunning, and it comes out and create an unsettledness within your spirit. And yes, Gods perfect love for us he has shown us what fear does but also how we can counter fear when it comes. Our Father instructs us in Isaiah 41;10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am God. I will strengthen you yes, I will help you I will uphold with My righteous right hand. With Gods gracious love for us knowing that we will encounter fear he has already given us a plan of exit when it comes. Thank you for sharing.
