COURSE 6 - INTRODUCTION TO HERMENEUTICS » The Importance of accurate biblical interpretation

Paula Bingham
Because the bible was written mainly in Hebrew, with a little Aramaic and Greek, it has to be studied. And because the bible was written by people of a different culture, at different time periods with different word connotations than English, it is highly important that we interpret the bible correctly. The Word of God says in 2 Timothy 2:15 to study to show thyself approved, a workman need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. First of all, the bible has to be studied, not just read for clear and concise understanding. The tools we need to study the bible is a concordance, a bible dictionary, commentary, Lexical aids, Webster’s Dictionary, a King James Bible, and most of all Holy Spirit. All these tools are necessary for delivering the Word of God.

It is essential for someone delivering the gospel to have accurate interpretation. Scripture says in Proverbs 30: 6, Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. No one wants to be put to shame. Just like a doctor or lawyer has to study his profession, a believer of God must do the same thing. And no one who’s sick wants to visit a doctor that doesn’t know what he or she is doing. There are people in this world that are truly sick; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually and need help. As Ambassadors of Christ, we are responsible for delivering His message appropriately. The Word will accomplish everything it needs to accomplish!

It is highly important to interpret the scriptures correctly because, it does say in Proverbs 30:6, add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. This is very important for the believers that are delivering the gospel because it states in, 2 Timothy 2:15 to study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. In doing all of this Holy Spirit must be a part of it all, the studying and delivering of the word of God. This will cause his word to effectively and correctively be delivered.

Thank you Paula for sharing that we have to rightly divide the word of truth and I completely agree. The consequences of interpreting the Bible incorrectly could push people away from God as we are called to be go and make disciples according to Matthew 28:19. I like your analogy about how doctors and lawyers must study their profession because just like leading people away from God there could be dire consequences as a patient or client. We have many tools and reference materials available just as you have listed to accurately deliver the truth of the word of God. We have seen in history of what happens to people who try to deceive God's chosen people. We should strive with all diligence to study to show thyself approved as you mentioned.
