COURSE 1 - FOUNDATIONS OF BIBLICAL STUDIES » Discuss the importance of a relationship with Holy Spirit to effectively interpret scriptures.

Kristy Hammond
God’s word in John 14:16 (NASB) provides the role of the Holy Spirit. The scripture reads that I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that he may be with you forever. Helper in this sentence has been translated from the Greek word Paracletos to mean one called alongside to help; Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor (Bible Gateway). The Holy Spirit gives guidance and knowledge. In order for those things to work, as believers we must cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit so that we can hear, understand, and know the truth. We get this understanding by spending time with God and reading His word, the scriptures. We learned from the lecture and lecture notes that the Holy Spirit is the best teacher and most reliable revealer of biblical truths; therefore there must be an established relationship with the Holy Spirit to effectively interpret scriptures, which means this relationship is vital for one’s knowledge and understanding. John 14:26 (NASB) confirms this but the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you’.

Kristy, I like how you shared the meaning of helper and comforter in Greek means Paracletos I didn't know that. I agree with you when you say we should have a relationship with the Holy Spirit so that we can hear and understand and know the truth. I know firsthand that when I read my word and spend time with God, I can better hear the Holy spirit speaking to me. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one come to the Father except through me NKJ.
