COURSE 1 - FOUNDATIONS OF BIBLICAL STUDIES » Discuss the importance of a relationship with Holy Spirit to effectively interpret scriptures.

Hope Khalil
Having a relationship with the Holy Spirit is vital, to effectively interpret the scriptures. Who better, than the Holy Spirit, to give us insight /illumination of God's Word. He is the divine author of God's Word! He wants to lead us and reveal the truth of the scriptures to us! Therefore, we must continue to fellowship with the Holy Spirit daily to build and have a deeper level of understanding of the Word of God. How? By praying and reading God's Word frequently. We must stay in tune, daily, with the Spirit of Truth, to be able to discern and weigh the truth, when interpreting scriptures, and in everyday life situations! If we allow the Holy Spirit to take the lead, He will not disappoint. In the book of John 16:13(KJV), it reads Howbeit when he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. Thus, the Holy Spirit is the key, lifeline, and source of all truth.
Reflecting over my life and my relationship with the Holy Spirit (from the time I came to know Christ Jesus, as my Savior at the age of 12) I have realized having a relationship with the Holy Spirit is truly a gift from God! 2 Corinthians 13:14 (KJV) reads The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen At the young age of 12, I was able to understand and interpret the KJV of the Bible, not at the level I understand now, but the Holy Spirit gave me insight /illumination of the literal and symbolic meanings of the scriptures at a young age. As I grew older and attended Central Bible College, I better understood what the Holy Spirit was revealing to me in the following scripture, 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) reads Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. It is our responsibility to study and to continue to study, and with the help of the Holy Spirit we can rightly divide the word of God (digging into the word for better understanding as well).
No matter how young or how old we are, there is time to have and build a relationship with the Holy Spirit and in turn, we have a better understanding of the Word of God, to glorify God!

Hope you really captured the meaning of how the Holy Spirit will teach you at any age what the truth of his Word is. Having not grown up in the church I was in my mid 30's before I gave my life to Christ. There was much I did not understand but I had a thirst to learn more about the Word and how it applied it my life. I had to unlearn many things and believe the truth of his Word. Day by day the Holy Spirit began to speak to me and illuminate words in scriptures as I pondered the context and how it applied to me in my daily life. Psalm 119:33 says teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statues, and I shall keep it to the end. Having the foundation of the Comforter walk along side me as I grew in knowledge gave me a better understanding of the Word. He started with the basics for me and showed me the truth about myself. Having this foundational relationship with the Holy Spirit has been nurturing to my development today.

Hope thanks for sharing your thoughts. I also agree that we must have a relationship with the Holy Spirit to interpret the scriptures. I like how you mentioned age does not affect one's ability to understand scripture. God is able to give us understanding on the level we are at when we have fellowship with Him daily as you said. As we do this our understanding is deepened. I am seeing this to be true in my six year old daughter's life as she is learning to read and memorize scripture she is able to share her understanding and provide meaning at a basic level.
