COURSE 7 - UNDERSTANDING THE GODHEAD » Benefits of knowing the Hebrew Names of God

Vanessa Howell
Hebrew was the first language of the bible along with some Aramaic and the different names used to refer to God are key in how to access to Him in our fervent prayers. The Hebrew names for God are quite descriptive and comprehensive. In Genesis 1:1 the name Elohim is the first title used to describe God and his power and might. From the video teaching with Dr. Riley we learned that Elohim means Creator. God is not one dimensional, he is all inclusive of everything that exists today. In John 1:3 it tells us that all things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made which would includes the Hebrew language. Calling upon God using specific names is a way to drill down or be very specific on our needs. Knowing and understanding these names today from the Hebrew language could help Christians have an even closer relationship with God and knowing that He has different names for numerous situations. God is an all-consuming fire and but still the same God! Hallelujah!!

Yes Vanessa, the Hebrew names for God are quite descriptive and comprehensive. When we call Him by the specific name we want to access, He performs according to the name that He's called. Many times, I've called on Jehovah Jirreh, because I needed provision in so many ways. I often do this in worship too. Calling out the different names that He possess shows a level of intimacy or knowing Him that is beautiful. In Jeremiah 33:3, he says, Call on Him and He will answer you and show you mighty things. There were many times where I needed something, when I called, He certainly always answered. What a great God we serve!

Vanessa, thank you for your response. I loved how you said knowing the names of God helps us to drill down to who he is. This gave me such a vivid picture to understand this subject. It is powerful to know how God is so many different attributes all at once.
